The game starts with the ball in the centre of the field. A countdown starts the timer as players move with their cars to hit the ball in the right direction. As soon as the game starts, the time of 5 minutes starts to count down. It only stops whenever a goal is scored. Any team that scores more goals than the other side gets to win the match. The time limit is 5 minutes and any game that ends in a tie will continue into Overtime. During Overtime, any team which scores first wins the match.

Rocket League supports w wide audience as players can enjoy the game in cross-platform, single players, or multiplayer mode. If players are looking to join online, there is a matchmaking system in the game that selects each team from an online player pool. The game offers casual mode or choose to take part in the online-based Competitive Seasons, where players can advance through different scenarios to earn rewards.
